In the mountain town of Ella there are apparently two hotels called The Mountain Heavens; we know this because our driver initially took us to the wrong one. You’ll know you’re in the right place if you have to drive up a narrow, unpaved path from the main road—a path that, coincidentally, takes you right past the tracks of the train that may have brought you to Ella in the first place.
You’ll also know you’re in the right place if you wake up to a jaw-dropping view of everything but the ocean facing southward.
Our tour operator booked us in an upstairs Deluxe Room, with much more space than two people could ever need. The highlight of our stay happened just before dawn after our first night. We were awoken by what we thought was a repair crew working on the roof; it turned out to be an extended family of monkeys that climbed down a drain pipe and paraded across our balcony—a few of the younger ones even stopped to check us out through the window.
Everything in the room was clean and fairly modern. My only complaint would be about the bathroom. As this was mountain country no air conditioning was necessary; it got plenty cool at night. Because of this we really needed a hot shower in the morning, but the water supply unfortunately wasn’t up to the task.
For our two-night stay we enjoyed a half board rate which included breakfast and dinner. When we checked in we were asked when we wanted to come to the restaurant for our evening meal, a thoughtful touch. The dinner menu had a few different options which I honestly don’t remember, as I went straight for the curry. It was fantastic.
For breakfast we had the added bonus of that magnificent south-facing view, plus a set menu that included toast, fresh fruit and a choice of main dishes.
Pro tip: the scrambled eggs are tasty but pale and look a bit like brains. If that sounds off-putting at all…
… Then do what I did and order a plain omelette instead.
The Mountain Heavens is all about the view; the early morning monkey show was an added bonus. For the reasonable price we’d gladly stay here again. We’ll just have to brace ourselves for a cold shower in the morning.
